Plot Outline
Set

MONSTROPEDIA A Brief History of Dragons by Simon E. Davies



A BRIEF HISTORY OF DRAGONS

A dragon is a mythical beast which is typically depicted with large, serpentine traits and is one of the most recognisable creatures of world mythology. The oldest recorded image of a dragon can be found in Australia, where a great and powerful beast, known as the ‘Rainbow Serpent’, was linked to the creation myth of the aborigine (Dream Time). Pictures of this serpent can be found on rock art (e.g. Arnhemland), and dates from between 8000 BCE – 20,000 BCE.

This is the only Stone Age reference known to depict a dragon. The next motif appears in China during the Neolithic, at around 6000 BCE. A series of jade totems were found, linked to the Yangshao and Hongshan culture, that were carved into the shape of a coiled serpent with wings. Early Chinese myths speak of dragons that helped to bring rain to the early farmers of China, such as the great Yinglong.

While the dragons of the east were regarded as powerful deities who held sway over the forces of nature, the dragons of the west were depicted as more cruel and monstrous. The Egyptian serpent, known as Apep, was said to reside in the darkness below the earth. Egyptian texts from the Eighth dynasty, (2200 BCE), say that every night, he attacked the sun god Ra as he passed through the twelve gates of the underworld.

Another terrifying dragon to appear in early mythology was Kur, the serpent under the mountain, who features in ancient Sumerian texts (2100 BCE). Kur was a stone like dragon, who abducted the goddess Ereshkigal into the underworld, which eventually became her home. Her brother Enki tried to save her, but Kur proved too formidable an enemy.

Even in south Asia, the dragon took on an antagonistic role. The great serpent Vritra was described as the personification of drought in Hinduism. He was identified as one of the Asura (an underworld demon), and described as a great snake, who blocked the course of India’s life giving rivers. It was the god of thunder, Indra, who used his powers to slay the great serpent, restoring life to his followers.

Not all dragons were evil, however. Some performed important duties for the gods, such as the Colchian Drakon from Greece. This huge beast guarded the Golden Fleece in the sacred garden of Ares. Legend says it never slept (making it the perfect sentinel). It was eventually slain by the heroes Jason and Medea, who stole the Golden Fleece to prove Jason’s right to the throne of Thessaly.

Although the dragon is found abundantly in Eurasia and Africa, there are very few references to it in the Americas. There is one great serpent in Mesoamerica that does fit the bill however. Quetzalcoatl is a Feathered Serpent, one of the major deities of the ancient Mexico. Depictions of this god can be found as early as the 3rd century CE, in the Teotihuacán civilization. He was associated with the elements of earth and water, bringing fertility to the lands. He also resided over the arts and crafts, and was a patron of the Aztec priesthood, inspiring learning and knowledge.

In the West African religion of Vodou, Ayida-Weddo is regarded as a serpent god of fertility, associated with rainbows, wind and water. He is known to his followers as the "Rainbow Serpent". Although the earliest known references of Ayida-Weddo come from the Fon people at around 500 CE, it is believed the worship of this snake is connected with the rainbow snake of Australia. This would suggest that at some point in ancient history (probably the middle stone age), their ancestors were one and the same.

The Japanese dragon was known as Nihon no Ryū. It is likely the legends of this mythical beast were imported from China and Korea, as the Japanese stories and depictions of the dragon seem very similar in style. Like the Asian dragons, the Japanese Nihon no Ryū water depicted as a benevolent creature, associated with water and rainfall.

Back in the West, the Red Dragon of Wales, known as 'Y Ddraig Goch', appeared on the national flag during the 9th century CE. The oldest recorded use of the dragon to symbolise Wales is in the Historia Brittonum, written around AD 829, but it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. In the Mabinogion (welsh mythology), there is a story about a red dragon fighting with an invading White Dragon.

In Slavic mythology, the word “zmey” is used to describe a dragon. In Russia and Ukraine, a particular dragon-like creature, the Zmey Gorynych, has three heads. It has a great green body and walks on two back paws, its two front paws much smaller and curled. The beast is renowned for its ability to spits fire. Russian dragons usually have heads in multiples of three. Some have heads that grow back if every single head isn't cut off or the headless neck isn't covered immediately in ash or burnt.

The last dragon on this list is the great Jörmungandr, also known as the “Midgard Serpent’. He is depicted as a colossal snake that lives in the ocean surrounding Midgard. He is so enormous that his body forms a circle around the entirety of the Norse Cosmos. Jörmungandr is the child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. It is said Jörmungandr will be killed by Thor at Ragnarok, but Thor will only walk nine paces before dying himself, of the serpent's poisonous venom.

The common features that unite all these mythical beasts of world mythology are their association with water and fertility. In the Stone Age and Neolithic era, it seems the dragon was revered as more benevolent creatures, bringing abundance and prosperity to its people. However, during the Bronze / Iron Age, the dragon became a more sinister creature, that was often slain by a heroic warrior or god, returning the world to order.

Syarat dan Ketentuan:

1) Ketik cerita pendek untuk entri di file *.docx Microsoft Word (*.doc bila pakai versi sebelum 2007). Format normal-justified dengan font Calibri 11pt untuk isi. Margin 1.15 atau 1, add space after paragraph. Sertakan juga profil singkat dan bibliografi di akhir file.

2) Kirim file cerita tersebut dengan format nama file dan subyek: "WriteAthlon - (JUDUL) (Nama Penulis)". Contoh: "WriteAthlon - DEWA BUANG ANGIN Kami Kaze". File tersebut di-attach atau boleh pakai Google Drive, Dropbox atau layanan sejenis. Kirim e-mail ke: evernasaga(at)gmail(dot)com

3) Cerita yang disertakan harus mengandung unsur fantasi, science fiction atau kombinasi keduanya.

4) Penjiplakan karya orang lain dilarang keras.

5) Setiap peserta hanya boleh mengikutsertakan satu entri cerita. Entri tersebut boleh juga di-post di tempat lain (misalnya di blog pribadi), namun diharapkan menyertakan juga keterangan kalau ceritanya sedang dilombakan di ajang Write-Athlon ini.

6) Cerita yang diikutsertakan boleh karya lama yang belum dipublikasikan, atau telah dipublikasikan di blog atau secara online. Dilarang menyertakan cerita yang telah terbit lewat penerbitan major atau telah diklaim menjadi milik pihak lain selain penulis asli.

7) Panjang cerita diusahakan maksimal antara 5000-6000 kata (berdasarkan word count di MS Word). Lebih disukai cerpen yang langsung selesai (one-shot). Cerita ditulis menggunakan tata bahasa yang baik. Tidak diperkenankan memakai bahasa singkat-singkat ala SMS atau bahasa alay.

8) Semua cerita yang diikutsertakan dalam ajang ini akan tetap menjadi milik peserta. Bilamana penulis ingin mengembangkan kisah entrinya ini lebih jauh (misalnya dibuat novel), silakan. Bila peserta tersebut ingin entrinya masuk dalam Everna Saga, silakan menghubungi penyelenggara event ini via e-mail pengiriman cerita.

Hadiah-hadiah Write-Athlon:

Akan dipilih 2 (dua) cerita pemenang. Para penulisnya akan mendapatkan hadiah:

Terbaik: 1 buku EVERNA SAGA: Hikayat Tiga Zaman
Favorit: 1 buku EVERNA SAGA: Utara Dan Selatan

Selain itu, cerpen-cerpen kontribusi peserta yang terpilih juga akan dipublikasikan bersama dalam Antologi EVERNA SAGA ranah.legenda, arung.semesta atau pandu.belia di Wattpad.com.
Editor Everna akan menghubungi para penulis yang bersangkutan tentang tawaran publikasi ini terlebih dahulu.

EVERNA SAGA Write-Athlon September-October 2015 @ Kastil Fantasi

Menyambut Pra-Rilis dua Antologi EVERNA SAGA: Hikayat Tiga Zaman dan Utara dan Selatan karya Andry Chang dkk. (http://fantasindo.blogspot.co.id/2015/08/everna-saga-utara-dan-selatan-hikayat.html)

Kami dari Tim Evernade-Vadis mengadakan event promosi dan giveaway dalam komunitas-komunitas pembaca dan penulis novel bergenre Fiksi Fantasi.

Tahap pertama, kita singgah di Kastil Fantasi di Goodreads.com dan bergabung dalam Lomba Cerita Bulanan September 2015.

Syarat-syarat utama:

1) LIKE Everna Saga Facebook Page di:

3) Entri peserta dikirim ke thread ini, sekaligus detil lebih lanjut tentang lomba ini:

Aturan main di TKP Kastil Fantasi:

1) Cerita yang disertakan harus mengandung unsur fantasi/science fiction.

2) Penjiplakan karya orang lain dilarang keras.

3) Setiap peserta hanya boleh mengikutsertakan satu entri cerita. Semua cerita di-post sendiri oleh penulisnya di topik ini. Entri-nya boleh juga di-post di tempat lain (misalnya di blog pribadi), namun diharapkan menyertakan juga keterangan kalau ceritanya sedang dilombakan di grup Kastil Fantasi (beri tautan ke thread ini).

4) Panjang cerita maksimal dua post yang harus di-post secara berurutan. Tidak ada panjang minimal. Sebagai info, maksimal karakter (termasuk spasi) dalam satu post di Goodreads adalah 12.000 karakter. Perlu diperhatikan kalau panjang karakter di software (MSWord, dll) dan Goodreads bisa berbeda, misalnya saja tulisan dengan huruf miring/italic memakai kode HTML yang menghabiskan tujuh karakter lagi (untuk masing-masing bagian yang di-italic).

5) Cerita ditulis menggunakan tata bahasa yang baik. Tidak diperkenankan memakai bahasa singkat-singkat ala SMS atau bahasa alay.

6) Semua cerita yang di-post akan tetap menjadi milik peserta. Bila ingin dikembangkan lebih jauh/serius (misalnya dibuat novel) atau dilombakan di tempat lain, silakan saja.

7) Komentar untuk cerita yang dilombakan tidak dilakukan di topik soal ini, melainkan di topik komentar.
Apabila ada yang menulis komentar di sini, komentarnya akan dihapus. Kedua topik dipisah demi alasan kerapian.

8) Bila ada pertanyaan, bisa langsung dilayangkan ke topik komentar.

Edisi kali ini adalah sesi kolaborasi dengan Everna Saga dalam rangka merayakan rilis indie-nya dua antologi EVERNA SAGA: Hikayat Tiga Zaman & Utara Dan Selatan!

Soal CerBul edisi ini adalah:

Buatlah sebuah cerpen fantasi yang menceritakan tentang kisah dunia dalam dunia!


Penjelasan:

1. Sang tokoh utama berasal dari suatu dunia (boleh Bumi, paralel Bumi, Everna, atau dunia lain), dan dia kemudian berpindah ke sebuah dunia lain atau memang diceritakan sudah berada di sana/terjebak di sana.

2. Dunia kedua (dunia tujuan) harus lebih fantasi/ajaib daripada dunia pertama (dunia asal).

3. Tema cerita di dunia lainnya ini bebas, boleh kuliner, olahraga, kesenian, slice-of-life, drama keluarga, atau apa pun. Selain seperti biasa, nuansa ceritanya juga bebas, boleh petualangan, komedi, romance, horor, dst., selama masih menjawab tema soalnya.

Sinopsis: Novel ini bermula, bertutur tentang rasa penasaran Reinhart dan keempat sepupunya, Benhart, Kenhart, Leinhart dan Jesica cari jawab asal-usul dan penyebab tanda lahir yang berbentuk bulan sabit dan bintang di dada mereka bergetar dan timbulkan hawa panas.

Ketika kakek Gadjah Biru cerita, mereka sebenarnya memiliki darah Ksatria. Tanda lahir yang mereka memiliki sebagai pertanda mereka punya tanggung jawab dan tugas besar yang harus mereka lakukan sebagai seorang ksatria, seperti yang telah diperbuat leluhur mereka, Gadjah Mada. Pada awalnya, mereka merasa aneh di zaman modern gini masih bicara soal kepahlawan, apalagi soal turun-turunan. Menggelikan, batin mereka. Tabir tanda lahir itu mulai tersingkap, ketika mereka kedatangan makhluk ruang angkasa dari planet Acrotus.

Ternyata tanda lahir mereka itu akibat dari spectrum sinyal elektromagnetis yang sengaja dikirim Windustra Ilmuan Agung Eirounos dari Lembah Andes, planet Acrotus, Galaksi Billetum (Bima Sakti). Dikirim karena tubuh kelima bersaudara itu memiliki spectrum elektromagnetis aura tubuh yang sama dengan pahlawan besar Lima Ksatria Agung Eirounos dari planet Acrotus. Bergetar dan hawa panas tanda lahir itu akibat terkoneksi gelombang resonansi Sabuk Terranos milik Lima Ksatria Agung Eirounos dari planet Acrotus yang bergetar juga cari pewaris tuannya. Begitu mereka memiliki Sabuk Terranos, maka mereka jadi manusia super. Bukan itu saja, Sabuk Terranos ternyata alat pemindai multifungsi yang membantu tuannya mengerti tentang berbagai hal, seperti bahasa, alat deteksi, melipat-gandakan kekuatan aura, pengendali dan sebagainya.

Kebetulan pada saat itu, di negeri kerajaan Eirounos planet Acrotus terjadi kekacauan yang didalangi bangsa Morgur yang dipimpin Megolianth yang terkenal jahat. Tak seorang pun di planet Acrotus yang mampu menumpas kejahatan Megolianth, kecuali Titisan Lima Ksatria Agung Eirounos. Kini pandangan mereka jadi berubah ketika utusan khusus Eirounos meminta bantuan untuk membebaskan Eirounos dari kejahatan Megolianth, Jiwa Ksatria Reinhart dan keempat saudaranya tak mampu menolak panggilan tugas dan tanggung-jawabnya sebagai Ksatria. Pesawat antar galaksi Cepollos membawa mereka sampai ke planet Acrotus. Akhirnya merekapun berpetualang di planet Acrotus dan banyak terlibat pertempuran yang maha dashyat dalam menumpas kejahatan Megolianth.
