An exploration of Fantasy and Science Fiction Worlds in literature and multimedia entertainment The official blog and novelblog for Evernade Saga and FireHeart Saga by Andry Chang
The novel itself, the English Version excerpts are in www.fireheart.tk, my blog and the Indonesian Version, book One has been published in print. So, maybe I shall need assistance and ask lots of questions, because some of the game systems are not built-in in the engine, i.e. banking system.
The FireHeart - Legend of the Paladins Project comprises of three books of a trilogy: - The Bounty Hunters - Masks of the Soul - The Lion, the Eagle and the Serpent
Progress Report per March 16, 2009: Completed 3 chapters in the first book, and is midway of chapter 4: The Wheel of Fortune. It's been one month since I began this project.
I've been busy working on a number of projects: first and foremost has been Book Four. I don't want to give away too much, but what I've been writing involves a flaming spear, a duel to the death, magic, elves, and werecats. Fun stuff! I've also been drawing Glaedr's eye and editing deleted scenes for the deluxe edition of Brisingr that will be coming out later this year.
It's strange to finally be working on the final installment in the series. After so many years spent thinking about this world and these characters, I sometimes find it hard to believe that I'll be saying goodbye to them before too long. Still, it gives me an enormous sense of satisfaction to write out scenes that I've been envisioning for over a decade now, and I can't wait for you to be able to experience them as well.
The weather here in Montana has been spectacular, alternating between ferocious, whirling blizzards that fill the valley with large, heavy snowflakes, and brilliant, sunny days, such as this one. Right now, a purple shelf of clouds hangs low over the Beartooth Mountains, while rays of pale sunlight slant underneath, illuminating the tan foothills and the dazzling, snowcapped peaks. Living here is a wonderful gift for me as a fantasy writer. If ever I need inspiration, I just look out my window at the landscape, and I feel as much awe and wonder as if I were looking at a dragon.
A very nice reader sent me a quill pen recently, which I write with occasionally. I had never used a quill pen before, so I was surprised by how much ink it can hold; with a single dip I can write a paragraph at least as long as the longest one in this newsletter. Pretty amazing! The only problem with quills is that you have to sharpen and reshape the tip every now and then, and eventually they wear away completely.
In these challenging times, it's important to keep a sense of humor, so I leave you with this joke: Why is it so hard to get a Dragon Rider to listen to you? . . . Because his head is always in the clouds!
Oh that's bad.
Anyway, I hope this finds you and your family well. And may your swords stay sharp!

---------------------------------------------------------------- THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH by Carrie Ryan
In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH
"A post-apocalyptic romance of the first order, elegantly written from title to last line."—Scott Westerfeld, author of the UGLIES series
Over spring break, Maggie Quinn was expecting to find plenty of trouble. But Trouble has started looking for her. One dead cow and a punctured gas tank later, she is stuck in a small town where an eerie predator is stalking the ranchland.
Years ago, in a small Louisiana town, a local boy named Elijah Landry disappeared. All that remained of him were whispers and hushed gossip in the church pews. That was until this summer, when a ghost begins to haunt Iris, and she's certain it's the ghost of Elijah.

Andreas can’t even reach the handle until he stands on tiptoes. Well, to pull the sword out will be even harder, isn’t it? The sword might make things easy for him, and...
‘Oh, well, despite of your virtues, Excalibur didn’t choose you either. We’ll proceed with the ladies. Perhaps miss... Carolyn can make a difference,’ Avariel says with a polite gesture.
Carolyn moves forward and tries to pull the sword without much effort. The sword won’t budge, and she instantly goes back.
‘Hmm... Perhaps you’d like to give that chance to other people. Your action was admirable, yet you’re meant for something else rather than the sword. Next, Miss Lavennia Iris, please.’
Iris takes her turn. She grabs the sword with two hands and releases it, and then walks back to join Carolyn.
‘What? Giving up without effort? Sure, you’re just helping out. You have sacrificed much, and you tried to make sure the one you’re supporting will have a chance. Maybe you deserve something, but definitely not the Sword of Justice. Oh, well, we have Don Hernan next.’
In spite of his injuries, Hernan tries to take out the sword. The sword doesn’t budge too, so he pumps his aura to the maximum and resumes the pull. Even with the strength to launch top-level skills like Maelstrom Serenade and Symphony of the Seven Seas, Hernan still can’t pull the Sword of Justice out.
Pressing beyond his limits, Hernan hurts himself from the inside. Blood sprinkles from his mouth and nostrils, and on those signs, he stops.
‘Though his efforts are wasted, Don Hernan has made a splendid effort, worthy of his fathomless courage. Alas, the sword didn’t choose him anyway. How about Lord Adler von Bachmann next?’
Before Adler can grab the sword, something electrifies him and pushes him away. Adler immediately knows why – it was the collision between positive and negative auras from the rival swords: Excalibur and Kraal’shazar. He stares at Avariel, and the archangel speaks.
‘Just one question for you: Are you willing to give up the Deathblade, sealed in our custody?’
Adler answers, ‘You already knew my answer since the first time we met. This sword is not as strong as ever without Vordac’s soul in it – it won’t endanger me. So, I’ll keep it and I’m sure I can master it. Two-hand swords are always my specialty, and I won’t give it up for the shorter and smaller one.’
‘If that’s your decision, you may stop. Even if I give you a second try, the result will be the same.’
‘So be it,’ says Adler, turning back.
‘That leaves the two Deverauxes. Well, Alexis, Cristophe, who among you want to try first?’
Cristophe says, ‘Let my brother do it first. He’s the eldest son, so the honor is his all along.’
Alexis responds, ‘It’s up to you, O’ Divine One.’
With a smile, Avariel says, ‘Very well, then. Prince Alexis, it’s your turn.’
The next morning, Alexis’ team arrives on the tower. He, Carolyn, Hernan, Andreas and Dejan go straight into the inner chamber where the other four champions and Avariel waited all night long. As they have rested and dined on the airship, Avariel begins the briefing for the final quest straightaway.
The eight champions kneel before Avariel. Alexis puts the Greaves of Diligence in front of him, and Hernan does so with the Armor of Righteousness.
‘So, all the champions are now here, safe and sound with the four artifacts. And now, let us begin the fifth and last quest. Behold – the Sword of Justice.’
The archangel flies up, his hands are open. The crystal floor opens below him, and a pedestal of crystallite rises from the hole. On top of the pedestal stands the Sword of Justice – the heavenly sword with crystal blade and a white, winged angel carved on its hilt. The lower half part of the blade is inside the pedestal. The sword shines most radiantly. Its holy aura interacts with the helmet, the shield, the armor and the greaves. The five artifacts glimmer and blink with irregular frequencies, as though they are talking to each other.
The archangel goes down on the floor and explains about the sword.
‘The Sword of Justice is indeed as ancient as our world. Our lord, Vadis the Almighty forged it from his own crystallized blood. And then, after his final battle against Adair he threw it into Hyrl Loch. The lake apparently was an inter-dimensional portal. So, the sword traveled in another world called the ‘earth’ or ‘Gaea’, given a name Excalibur and aided a man named Arthur in his conquests.
When Arthur was about to die after his last battle, he learned about the origin of the sword from the Lady of the Lake and decided to return it. He sent a knight to Avalon, and the knight threw it into the lake. The Lady of the Lake caught it and went back through the portal to Hyrl Loch in this world. The inter-dimensional portal was closed ever since.
The Lady gave the Excalibur to me and I re-forged it into the Sword of Justice you see now, and you all know the rest of the story from history books, folklores, legends and ballads.’
The champions and Dejan are awestruck on learning the origin and the true name of the Sword of Justice – Excalibur, which previously was a mystery for them.
‘So, as the sword has aura and will of its own, it’ll choose its new master in the same manner as it chose King Arthur of Camelot, Sage the Fireheart and Antoine the Avenger: Whoever draws the blade out of this crystallite may borrow it and become its new master. Plus, he or she will get the whole arsenal: the armor, the helmet, the greaves and the shield.
Now I shall give each and every one of you a try.’
‘Each and every one of us?’ Carolyn protests. ‘I thought only the ones who got the artifacts may try.’
‘Well, the artifact winners must be excelled at a certain strength that suits that artifact. He or she got a greater chance to get the sword, and yet the overall strength of body, mind and heart are to be accounted for. Anyway, each of you has only undergone two quests, not four. So, let the sword decide and choose its new master. If none of you are chosen, you must leave all your trophies here. Maybe one day a true Heir of Vadis will come and claim the arsenal.’
On hearing that, Carolyn thinks of the four other candidates who are absent: Robert, Kyflynn, Desmond and Agustina. Without further ado, the archangel calls upon the first champion.
‘Eidos Crydias!’
The old chronomage goes forward, mumbling something about his old bones and excessive labor. He grabs the hilt of Excalibur and tries to pull it with all his might. The sword, however, won’t budge at all. Avariel immediately calls the second candidate.
‘Okay, enough, Mr. Eidos. You may go back. Next, Andreas Marvellini alias Rollo Bigstumble.

Terra Everna The world of Vadis, Adair and Enia Created by the One Kept by the Three
Terra Everna Where three live as one Positive, negative and neutral Magic, science and nature
Terra Everna The world where myths are real Fantasy is history Fairy tales are factual
Terra Everna The world of dangers and adventure When light and dark collide And the neutral shed tears
Just like in our world, our dimension, when all beings live in harmony, Terra Everna is indeed a beautiful world of love, hope and peace. But when evil – the extreme form of negativity – disrupts the balance, there are always conflicts between good and the Trinity of Evil: hatred, destruction and terror.
Evil once ruled supreme in this world, the Evil named Vordac, the Dark Overlord. His domination was ended by Sage the Fireheart, who assembled the Seven Heroes and waged the First Crusade. Vordac has once rebelled against Adair the Sodomos, the Dark God. Adair defeated Vordac, banished him from the underworld and cursed Vordac to roam in Everna eternally. As a result of that, Vordac’s spirit can possess mediums or hosts, and after his defeat to Sage, he possessed a medium, the Great Sword Deathblade.
Vordac re-emerged with the help of his host, Mildred Urganon, but he again met a fatal defeat from Fireheart’s son, Antoine the Avenger. And again, Vordac’s spirit found refuge in Deathblade.
And now, that very sword is in the hands of an old man with white long hair, eyebrows, moustache and beard. He is standing in a dark, vast room with another old man and a she-elf. The bearded man talks,
‘At last, we found the perfect, safest place to keep the sword.’
‘Are you sure, Azrael?’ says the blonde, long, curly-haired she-elf inquiringly, ‘Because, honestly, this room is not inaccessible enough.’
‘I agree with Carolyn,’ says the old, half-bald man with a white moustache. ‘I say we better melt this sword in the lava pit.’
‘I can’t believe a scientist like you would say that, Theripides. If we melt this sword, we’ll destroy it. Vordac’s spirit will be free and possess any of us,’ says Azrael.
‘Hmph, I guess we don’t have a choice, then,’ says Theripides. ‘We have searched for months, and Her Majesty here offered this place although she is not sure either.’
Carolyn responds with a sigh, ‘I guess we have to be satisfied with this place. It has all natural barriers, enough to prevent any being from reaching here. All we have to do now is adding some more to make sure no one can claim the sword, even us.’
Azrael nods and makes a decision, ‘Very well, then, we’ll seal Deathblade in here! I will now create a force field using this orb, and I also need some magical assistance from you two. This will be the final barrier should others fail. So, shall we begin?’
Azrael holds the sword with his outstretched hands, and Theripides casts a spell to keep it aloft.
‘Eleviant!’
Azrael releases the sword and reaches into his pocketed belt. He takes out a silvery-white orb, and places it on his upright palm, and chants,
‘Aegis, ma washtar galatre Kraal’shazar, im gemackt an Corona Infer. (Aegis, please help seal the Deathblade, as the Little Sun is being made)’
The orb reacts and emits violent sparks, then flies towards Deathblade. When the orb touches the sword with a devil carved on its hilt and seven runes of Original Sin carved on its blade, the sword suddenly vibrates very hard. The red eye carved on the blade just above the hilt is widened although it’s alive. A thick aura of darkness comes out from the eye, resisting the power from the white orb.
The orb intensifies its energy, and the sword follows suit. As they reach the peak of their auras, anyone can see a visualization of a thunder bird and a black devil fighting each other. Soon enough, the thunder bird still doesn’t get the upper hand against the devil.
Seeing this grim prospect, Azrael decides to help, saying,
‘I’ll begin the sealing process now! The dark energy from Vordac is still too strong for Aegis! Carolyn, help Aegis too!’
While chanting an indistinct, long mantra, Azrael releases threads of light from his ten fingers of his hands. The threads of light spin around the devil and the thunder bird as though trying to cover both of them in a bigger orb.
‘Yggmaishduma!’
Carolyn’s Force of Nature spell is much simpler than Azrael’s, yet more focused, giving more and ever-amplified pressure on the sword and also amplifying Aegis’ power. Under such pressure, the devil’s shadow roars. It amplifies its energy threefold and overpowers Aegis and the three wizards. It now looks like a devil’s shadow with an overlarge, open mouth. It’s going to swallow Aegis!
Knowing that more power is needed, Theripides now shows his speciality: his ability to cast two spells in one time. Using his free hand holding the Chrono Chakram, he casts Meteor Shower. Bolts of fiery meteorites pour down from above, and all focused towards one target: the Deathblade. The battle is in an even footing again, but the wizards need something more – because they don’t know how long they can keep this on. If one of them runs out of mana, all will be lost.
A calm loving smile shows on Azrael’s face. He knows at once that for the greater good, he must sacrifice himself. He stares at Carolyn and Theripides in turns, and then nods. Just then, a layer of light appears, covering Azrael’s body and making him shine dazzlingly. Carolyn and Theripides stare back at Azrael in terror: Azrael is going to cast Divine Retribution, the spell that once made him vanish without a trace – until he was found again about five years later.
Before any of them can say anything to stop Azrael, he already spoke the incantation aloud.
‘Eleison ex Tributalis!’
