3.1.7.9. - I'm Here

Lady With Blue Hair. Image Source: Wallpaperstock.net

I’m Here
I’m here.
A woman is bathing alone in a pool of milk, an indoor marble pool in a big, marble room. She is the same blue-haired woman who heard voices in her bedroom some time back. She is startled to hear that voice again.
I’ve found him, the chosen one.
She holds her head. She is in a greater pain than before. The voice is throbbing in her mind like the poundings of a sledge hammer. It’s threatening her, torturing her mind.
I was delayed, but I was not stopped.
She frowns, her eyes are widened, her teeth grit and chatter.
I’m here. But I don’t come out. Yet.
Her face shows a bit of confusion, but then a grim determination. She tries to fight the pain and catch the message, no matter what.
When the time comes, I’ll come out and conquer all.
            Hhahaha…. HAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!!
The last laugh is the most painful pressure, a direct blow in her mind.
Then her pain suddenly subsides like a chilly, soothing wind after the storm. The woman is having her own thoughts now.
So this is an ultimatum. Things are becoming clear to me now.
She murmurs to herself. It seems it’s her habit, maybe out of loneliness and all the pressures of responsibilities she must bear on hearing this kind of message.
‘I know what to do now.’
The woman wades along the pool of milk, climbs the steps at the other side of the pool, grabs a cloth, wraps it around her body as a towel and she walks out slowly from the marble room.

3.2.9.6. A Soul Unmasked, A Soul Lost Part 2

Robert walks hurriedly out from the Restricted Area. Luckily no one there suspects Robert on anything. They think he must be in some kind of urgent mission from the Pope. Robert tries hard to look calm, but his mind is racing wildly.
This is madness. All Vadis' teachings still can't change her. She's still in love with her obsessions, her beauty and lust. Now I have to flee from her sight because of that. Perfect piety and wisdom are just her masks, hiding the beast within.
Now what? I must take my friends out from here, but they are now in separate places around the Basilica. There's no way I can find them all quickly.
Then suddenly an idea comes to him. Instead of going around the Basilica, Robert goes directly to the dormitories. He enters his room, packs his things and finds that his kiliji is not on his back.
Damn! It's missing! I must've left it in the Pope's room! Now she has more leverage to force me! No way, I must flee immediately! No time to take the others! But if I left, they'll be in trouble. What should I do? Oh, I know.
Robert takes out a paper and a quill, and after scribbling a memo on it, he puts it on the table, finishes packing and goes out at once.
He walks towards the North Gate, and the guards there stop him, saying, 'Sir Robert? Aren't you supposed to guard the Pope in the Central Chambers?'
Robert doesn't look nervous at all because he is ready with an answer.
'The Pope sent me away on a secret mission. Don't tell this to anyone else except my partners. If you try to confirm this with the Pope, she'll deny that because if she does, it won't be a secret anymore.'
'Lo, what's so secret, Rob?' says a voice. Robert turns around and finds Chris standing behind him. 'Are you trying to go away without us?'
'On the contrary, my friend,' says Robert, still calmly. 'Gather our friends, go packing and look at the note I left you in my room. Follow the instruction there and you'll know. Go now! Leave your post and make haste!'
Chris is a bit confused on hearing that, but he immediately responds, 'Okay, Rob. You're the leader. We'll follow your instructions.'
'Good. See you later, my friend.'
'You too, my friend.'
Robert immediately walks away through the gate, and vanishes into the darkness of night. And Chris sets off at once to gather the rest of the party.

==oOo==

Meanwhile, in the Restricted Area, a nun is standing in front of the Pope's room, knocking on the door.
'Your Grace. Your Grace, your tonic is ready. Do you wish to take it now or later?'
There's no response from inside.
'Your Grace, are you sleeping? Please, Your Grace, it's almost time for your dawn praying. Please, Your Grace!'
Still, no answer from inside, although the nun rose her voice a bit on the last sentence so the Pope can hear it. The nun sighs, and the female guards are also a bit puzzled upon this.
Maybe Pope Xylen is angry? Or too tired? Or fell sick because of her excessive fatigue? Never once in her fifteen years reign she missed the dawn praying. She always gives perfect practices of discipline, and her wisdom exceeds her predecessors. Why breaking it now?
The nun waits for another minute, and then she realizes that Pope Xylen will punish her severely if she fails to remind the Pope about crucial rituals like this. So, once again, this time with a loud voice, the nun calls.
'Your Grace, please wake up! Please, for Vadis' sake, for the fellow believers' sake!'
The nun said that with her voice trembling and her body shivering all over. She'd rather be punished for insolence than negligence. But still, she receives no answer. So, gathering her last drops of courage, the nun talks to the guards.
'Please let me in. You know the Pope didn't answer at all, so I think there must be something wrong with her. Sister Nabelia! Go to Cardinal Ryddus and see if he can override the magical lock on this door! Go now!'
Nabelia, the servant nun's companion rushes away to carry out her instruction, while the servant nun outstretches her hand to the door.
'Let's check if the door is all right. I want to break an entrance. Should the Pope is angry; I'll take all the blame.'
The nun touches the door. Nothing happens, but she is still tense. Now comes the difficult part. She tries to push the door open. Although it's a heavy door, a woman can open it without much difficulty. And to her surprise, the door opens!
She begins to worry. The magical lock is not on! Only the Pope and Cardinal Ryddus know the spell to open it! If the Pope didn't neglect to put the lock back, I'm afraid...
As the nun comes in, her worry proves to be true. She shrieks in extreme horror at the sight in front of her. There, on the marble floor, Pope Xylen Felicitia lies face down, unmoving. Her blue hair is dipped in a puddle of blood under her body. And the most saddening thing is, there's a curved long sword stuck on her back. Her body and her rare-fabric nightgown are all covered in blood. The wall just behind her, the marble table and two square-shaped marble vases are also splattered with blood.
There's no mistaking it. The Pope was murdered! Someone used the curved sword to take her life away. The guards are also dismayed on seeing that proof of failure, and one of them immediately runs away, shouting an alarm.
'Murder! The Pope is murdered! The Pope is murdered! She's dead! Sound the alarm!'
Soon the alarms and the shouts of 'The Pope is murdered!' spread in the Basilica like wildfire. All who hear that are panicked, like a body that just lost a head. Terror and chaos spread in this holy ground as the Pope's blood tainted it. Some fall on their knees, some faint, and the rest rush to the Restricted Zone. They don't believe what they just heard, and now they don't believe their eyes.
Cristophe is walking with Carol and Iris to find Andreas when they hear the news, and they can swear that nothing is as shocking as this one in their entire life.
Chris exclaims, 'WHAT!? Pope Xylen was murdered during our watch!? That's... that's IMPOSSIBLE!'
'And Robert left the Basilica? This is very odd. Very odd indeed,' says Carolyn, shaking her head in disbelief.
'Shall we go to the death scene or to the dormitories first?' Iris asks.
'Rob instructed us to go to his room, so we'll do what he told. It might be related to this matter,' says Chris.
Iris adds, 'It's all so... suspicious.'
They all go to the west wing dormitories immediately, and not seeing Andreas there, they decide to go directly to Robert's room. In there, they only find a letter on top of the table. Chris picks up the single-folded letter, and together with Carol and Iris read it without speaking. Robert's writing is as bad as ever, but it is still readable.

Dear friends,
The Pope can't be trusted. She banished me from Valanis. She took my kiliji, please ask her to return it to me. Leave the Basilica at once, and meet me just outside the North City Gate before noon. If you don't find me there, that means I fled for my life, parted from you for your own good. My quarrel with the Pope doesn't concern you, and I hope she is alive and well because the war against the heir has begun.
And for you, take care. Keep this secret.
- Robert

From his writing, we can say that Robert wrote that in a great hurry, but kept his habit on trying to explain everything. When Chris and the others are a bit thoughtful, trying to make ends meet, suddenly there's a loud banging on the door. Startled, Iris moves towards the door. Chris puts Robert's letter beneath his armor as the door opens and several people rush in.
Father Andreas and Father Bernides are among them, with a very concerned look on their faces. Cardinal Ryddus, on the other hand, shouts with authority.
'Robert Chandler! Surrender yourself at once!'
'But he is not here, Father Ryddus,' says Bernides.
Ryddus is disgruntled, and then shouts to the guards, 'Search this place! Search for clues of his whereabouts! Strands of his hair, drops of blood, anything!'
Then, turning again, Ryddus just realizes something.
'And... what are his friends doing here? ARREST THEM! Interrogate them in the dungeons!'
'Wait! Wait!' says Chris. 'We just arrived here. We have nothing to do with the Pope's murder.'
'But you are his friends, right? That's just enough to charge you on conspiracy to assassinate the Pope, and the penalty is death! Robert used his kiliji to kill the Pope, and left it there! It's obvious! He's the killer!'
'Hold on a minute, Father Ryddus!' says Andreas. 'I know Robert, I've been with him for quite a long time, and I'm absolutely sure he didn't do such thing!'
Ryddus cuts in, 'Unless he is the heir.'
That word alone throws the entire room into silence. Robert is the heir. Maybe. It's no use arguing about other possibilities when almost everybody is in panic. The formidable defense in Basilica Vadisium was breached by a traitor, an insider, the man the Pope counted on most.
Reasons are futile now, when despair fills the air. Chris, Iris and Carolyn don't have a choice but to follow the guards quietly.
'Don't worry, my friends. I'll help you out of this. I think Robert is framed. I got a number of good reasons why,' says Andreas.
'I don't know him much,' says Father Bernides the morbit. 'But I'll help you ponder on this matter because I need to help Prince Cristophe.'
Andreas talks on, trying to calm his friends, 'Be patient, my friends. By Vadis, we will clear this matter up and clear our names... and Robert's too.'

A Soul Unmasked, A Soul Lost

As night comes that very day, Robert and his friends are still fulfilling their duties to guard Xylen, the Supreme Leader of Vadisianity.
They are stationed in separate areas within the Basilica Vadisium. Carol guards the west wing dormitories, Iris the southern parts, rooms for research and study, Andreas the east wing dormitories, and Chris the north gates.
The central area looks secure, says Robert in his mind. I hope it stays this way after we're gone. Vordac surely understands that they cannot defeat the Forces of Light by killing their leader. As long as we keep our faith, we can still fight back. Being a part of the Light Side is my new life's resolve. My homeland can wait. Eloise can wait. I'm fighting for them; that's my priority.
The giant bell in the topmost tower of Basilica Vadisium clangs ten times. Robert rubs his face, trying to keep himself awake after five sleepless nights.
'Robert Chandler... Sir?'
Robert is startled. He turns back quickly, his hand on his Grimlock that hangs on his back. To his relief, it's only a Vadisian monk.
The monk is not surprised on seeing Robert's reaction, and speaks in a grim voice, 'You are expected in Her Holy Grace's room on the double. Please, follow me.'
Robert doesn't bother to ask for reasons. He just follows the monk towards the Pope's bedroom, in a Restricted Area where men are forbidden to enter.
The monk leaves Robert at the area entrance, saying, 'Just walk straight and you'll find a carved, big, white door. Report yourself to the guards, they will inform the Pope and she will give you permission to come in. Praise Vadis.'
Robert nods and walks staright through the gate into the Restricted Area. The nuns there stare at Robert warily, but as it was the Pope's order, they don't do anything else. Robert does exactly like the monk's direction, and the Pope lets him in.
Soon Robert finds himself in one of the grandest bedroom he has ever seen. Everything here – like the dining room – is mostly made of marble. The bed lies in the middle – a round, big, marble bed with fluffy white mattress on top of it. Marble statues, table and wardrobes are placed around the wall with alabaster pillars.
Robert looks around. Among the beautiful, state-of-art things in the bedroom, nothing compares with the occupant: a beautiful, blue-haired and blue-eyed lady lying on the bed.
She is dressed in a long night gown made of very rare fabric that's thinner than silk, but do not look transparent at all. Nevertheless, a highly esteemed lady like Xylen should never wear it outside the so-called 'Restricted Area', because it'll ruin her honor and decency. Robert is stunned. He never saw a Pope that looked like that before. He smells... trouble.
Xylen, on seeing Robert's awkwardness, says in a soothing yet seducing tone,
'Don't be afraid, Robert. It's only me. Come closer.'
Robert hesitates, but then he takes three steps forward. He still doesn't trust Xylen, and more so when he meets her in an indecent fashion like now.
'Come closer. Or do you want me to come to you?'
Although this is such an outrage in Robert's eyes, but Robert's rudeness will be an outright insolence. So, Robert takes five more steps forward with extreme caution.
'Come closer, I said. Real close.'
'This is as far as I can go, Your Grace – unless you are properly dressed first.'

'Know you what of proper? Know you what of holy? That was what you think of me eh, Robert?' says Xylen, now sounds a bit irritated. 'Oh, yes, I can read your mind. And now let me say the same thing to you: Know you what of proper? Know you what of holy?
You only know it's holy and proper when you see it with your own eyes! Only the surface, and never within! You have disappointed me by saying that you're leaving, and now your thoughts of me disappoint me once more! You think I can rely fully on the magical mechanisms and guards alone? No, Robert. I need you to stay near me all the time until the heir is vanquished!
I let the other champions hunt the heir down, but at least one must stay. I thought you and your friends fill stay here as long as it takes, but no, you're no different than the others. You'd rather use me as bait to lure the heir to attack quickly and you'll leave here quickly so you can return to your homeland and visit your beloved!'
Robert is thunderstruck. This woman can read my thoughts! My innermost secrets are in her hands now! If she tells anyone else about this, I'll be doomed!
'Oh yes, Robert. You'll certainly be doomed if I tell anyone how improper and unholy you are. A secret, forbidden love affair with a princess. You'd rather go and persuade her to give her status up and follow you than to undertake a mission that is holy and proper in the whole.
But, then again, what use is holiness and properness if they deprive us of the things we really want in life? They deprive us of our own happiness!'
'What do you mean by that? I'm willing to give up my happiness for the sake of others,' says Robert.
'Tsk, tsk. But you are wrong, Robert. You don't have to give up your happiness for others' sake. You can always search for other things that can make you happy.'
'Such as?'
'You can find yourself another lover. Take your friend, the sorceress for instance. She has her eyes on you, no doubt about that. Why don't you accept her love? You two can be happy, you know.'
'That's really none of your business.'
'Oh yes, that's not my business, mind. But my business is what I'm going to offer you: myself.'
'What? Oh, no, no, that's not possible.'
'Why not? Am I not beautiful enough for you?' says Xylen, crawling on her bed to go near Robert. Her moves are so seductive, Robert's heart races on seeing that. She continues,
'Or is that because I'm a Pope? Oh, forget that. In here, we are just a man and a woman. And I have the power and authority to determine what's holy and proper around here. Besides, Vadis didn't teach us to commit celibacy to serve him, right? So, I'm going to change things up. I'll be the first Pope with a husband and we both will make history!'
'Please, Your Grace, don't make me do things against my heart! Indeed, you are very beautiful, perhaps more than anyone I know. But we have our own responsibilities! You are the Pope, leader of all Vadisians in the world! You'll mar Vadis' face if you do this!'
'Didn't we all? Sinners everywhere, including you and me. You and your little secrets, me and mine.'
Xylen is now real close with Robert. Robert tries to back away, but Xylen moves even closer.
'No, My Grace, please don't do this. I beg you.'
'I can't. You see, my innermost desire in my life is to make love with a stud like you. What use is all my beauty treatment if no man can feel my body, my silky skin and my blossomy lips?'
'It's a waste, honestly, but for the sake of all Eternia, If I were you, it's a worthy sacrifice.'
'Oho, but you're not me and I am I. And I say, I want you.'
Xylen keeps pushing forward, cornering Robert on a wall, saying,
'It's a curse being beautiful, you know. The thought of getting myself tasted keeps torturing me, every day and every night. I can't live the rest of my life in peace until I feel it. I desperately need to feel it. To feel... you.'
'No... no... Don't.'
Before Robert can push her away, Xylen presses her body against Robert's. Robert feels his heart throbbing uncontrollably, his blood boiling and rising to his head, and he's shivering all over.
'Or at least, give me a bit of satisfaction through...'
Xylen hugs Robert tightly.
'One...'
Her face is right in front of Robert's.
'Little...'
She closes her eyes. Robert is totally mesmerized now.
'Kiss.'
Without warning, Xylen kisses Robert's lips.
Passionately.
Lustfully.
It's a kiss of passion alone, a total submission to lust, not to love. It's a very dangerous game that can ruin someone's reputation and someone's life. Only true love based on a firm commitment can prevent that.
True love?
That very thought snaps Robert back to his senses.
Oh, no! Eloise! I won't submit myself to this!
Robert pushes himself away from that kiss, preventing himself from betraying his own true love and making the worst mistake of his life.
'No, I still can't.'
'What, not even a perfect kiss? You disappoint me, Robert. How dare you refuse this offer no other man can get? Being the "Protector of the Pope" and all the privileges that come with it?'
'Because nothing worth more than true love. I'm sorry, My Grace. But my heart belongs to another.'
Suddenly the Pope bursts out in anger and slaps Robert's face.
'Get out! Out! No one has ever, ever insulted me like this in my entire lifetime! But you! A Pope, insulted by a lowly bounty hunter! Get out of here now! Leave the Basilica right now, and don't let me see your face again! EVER! You're discommunicated from the Church of Vadis!'
'As you wish, Your Grace,' Robert responds.
Xylen mutters some kind of spell, and the door to her bedroom is magically unlocked. Robert bows slightly and then opens the door and gets out immediately. As the door shuts, Xylen picks a statue of Vadis made from a single pearl and throws it to the door. The statue hits the door and breaks up in pieces.
Xylen grunts and grits her teeth in her wrath, and then she suddenly smiles. She has one hand on her back and takes out a sword. It's Robert's father, Emmerich's kiliji sword. Apparently she stole it when Robert was totally mesmerized and distracted, and now she hugs it lovingly, thinking.
Oh, well, at least this is not a total loss. I lost a man, but got his sword. A souvenir for a soul masked in decency and holiness. When I became myself, all I got was a rude rejection. Know you what of proper? Know you what of holy? Aren't they just masks of your soul, imprisoning you in a cursed life, depriving you from the true happiness? What an irony!
Xylen keeps hugging the kiliji. She's laughing with tears coming out from her eyes, and cries in her laughter.

3.2.9.5. Plans for Defense Part 02

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The Pope is conducting a meeting and cannot meet them until one hour after lunchtime. And then Robert and his friends are invited to lunch with the Pope and several Cardinals in the grand dining room.

They all sit on silver chairs facing a round, large table made of marble. There’s a big, round tray-like marble plate on the top of the table, so they can easily pass food to each other, and reminds them about Vadis’ teachings such as:

Serve each other; it’s better for you than getting others to serve you.

Put a good use of your wit and your surroundings, it’ll bring blessings to you and others.

Everything in Basilica Vadisium is observed extremely carefully to maintain holiness and purity, so one may say that the Holy City is ‘full’ of Holy Aura.

About the food, Vadis doesn’t forbid his followers to eat meat from animals, but reminds them very clearly that eating excessively is a sin against your own body, as it is one of the manifestations of greed.

So, the reason why the monks and priests only eat vegetables is simply to maintain good health. The Pope and cardinals eat the same food as the monks and servants, promoting equality and humility to all. Vegetables and water.

Robert and his friends also feel this air of grace and easily blend with their table-fellows. Even Chris manages to behave properly – mostly because of his status, you may say – with spotless table etiquette.

Then, when everybody seems to stop eating, the Pope talks, ‘Well, Robert, what is it you want to talk about?’

Robert answers, ‘Your Grace, we come to you to express our gratitude for saving Carolyn’s life and picking me up in the Black Forest.’

It’s all Vadis’ will, my child. We are but followers of his divine will.’

Praise Vadis. Your Grace, pardon our insolence, but we need to ask one more favor from your graces.’

Do continue. You’ve been doing us a favor in return, mind.’

It’s been six days since we began our watch day and night to protect Your Grace. And now, seeing that your defenses are all set and ready, me and my friends are now ready for another quest.’

Outside Valanis?’

Inside or outside Valanis, but not in Basilica Vadisium.’

Hmm. How come? Please fill us in. What do you propose?’

Now Andreas takes the conversation over with a full presentation of his plan.

Your Grace, we have been conferring among ourselves and trying to delve into the dark forces’ mind, predicting their moves. You said there must be spies in here, so they will probably know about our defenses.

Then, they can gather a multitude to break it, or simply find weaknesses to breach into it, a much more efficient way. They can do it with our without us to guard you. Even if they hire a troop of assassins like MacLair, your traps, snipers and mages will suffice to stop them.’

Xylen interrupts in a disappointed tone, ‘No, no, instead, you gave me an impression that our defenses are not enough to hold them. If I was the heir, I will send a troop of assassins, wraiths and ghosts. The assassins kill the mages, and the ghosts break through magically unprotected spots and do their killings as only magic can destroy them. No, no, we still need you all here. Too bad I can’t persuade Kyflynn to stay.’

‘Then again,’ says Andreas. ‘If we stay here, the heir may choose not to attack until we leave, but for how long? He might be weak now but he’ll be powerful again sooner and later, and nothing can stop him then.’

Robert adds, ‘So, we will act first before they do. Our departure will leave a hole, but we won’t leave the city. The heir will attack immediately, and we will come back to aid you.’

‘But then, it’ll be too late,’ says Xylen. ‘We can’t risk that.’

Chris speaks up, ‘Even if we help, it won’t guarantee that we will win against them. Our proposal is just a strategy suggestion. Forgive us if it offended you, Your Grace.’

‘Better try and fail than not trying anything at all,’ says Xylen. ‘If the heir can’t strike here, he’ll try somewhere else anyway. So, the best chance of stopping him is here. Anyone have another strategy? Speak it out so we can ponder on it.’

Silence. No one speaks up or even move a muscle. The Cardinals are no war planners, so they haven’t prepared a modification for the scheme they already have. Father Bernides breaks the icy situation by saying,

‘I think Robert’s plan is worth a try. Let’s work this plan for a week or so. If the heir doesn’t take the bait, we can recall Robert’s team to the Basilica or send them on their way.

If in case we’re under attack, the mages and guards will cast sign flares immediately, and reinforcement will arrive quickly.’

‘Very well, then. We’ll go with Robert’s plan,’ says Xylen. ‘Robert, you and your party may go tomorrow morning, thus commencing our plan. Brother Andreas, you’re free to go with them. Brother Bernides, will handle communication. Brother Nicodemus will lead the mages, and Brother Ladineus will assist him. The foot soldiers, griffin riders, archers and crossbowmen will report to Brother Ulbergis, and Brother Ryddus will manage the traps. Let us pray to Vadis for protection.

And one last thing, remember this always. Don’t give up the fight should I fall. A Pope can die and be elected again, but our faith must never waver. We’ll fight the darkness to the very end, and may Vadis walk with us along the way.’

Fulfilling promises is yet another virtue of Robert Chandler the Orcbane, as he proves it by guarding Pope Xylen in Valanis from assassination. The other champions, Kyflynn, Desmond, Agustina, Adler, Hernan, Eidos and Prince Alexis also fulfilled their promise to guard Xylen, but only for three days.

At the fourth day, one by one the champions take their leave with the Pope’s consent. Only Robert remains in Ascension with his companions, Cristophe, Carolyn, Andreas and Iris. They resolved to stay in Valanis until the Valanisians finished strengthening their defenses.

In order to do so, The Valanisian authorities employ more armed guards and about six hundred mages coming from the cities of Encanta and Pervilon just for a sole purpose: defending the last and center of the Light Side against Vordac’s heir and his army of darkness.

As the sixth day arrives, Robert finds himself a bit tired from lack of sleep. Nevertheless, he spares time to observe his surroundings, collecting information to formulate a decision.

Whew! I’ve never seen such formidable defense in my whole life! Mages and guards in every corner, dark aura detectors, magical booby-traps, enchanted mirrors, gargoyles on the roofs... even Prince Alexis also sent some griffin riders to patrol the skies. Neither nook nor cranny misses their sight.

Even the Pope’s bedroom is reinforced with the best devices, three times more powerful than the rest. Her door is magically locked, only the Pope herself can open it. No assassin, neither the legendary MacLair nor his rival Kyflynn can sneak into this one, and six hundred trained mages can overcome an army of ten thousand men!

I guess my job here is done, then. Carolyn is now in perfect health and fit for a long trip, so we’ll stay one more night here as thanks to the Valanisians for saving Carol, and we’ll be off by tomorrow morning and go to Lore, to my homeland, to my beloved, Eloise...

Robert is startled by that thought. He lets his mind drifting again along that sweet memory, and makes another resolve.

Alas, I never had a chance to explain this to Carol. She’s so cheerful and loyal, this knowledge will only break her heart, and parting will be certain. Maybe she’ll understand someday. Anyway, she’s acting normal nowadays, treating me only as a friend and a partner to argue with.

Oh, Eloise, wish you can see my friends. I don’t really mind if you choose another man suitable to your stature, but since you’ve decided to wait for me, I’ll try my best until our paths meet again. Either I become a duke or you give up your royal status for a simple life with a vagabond like me. We’ll hunt monsters together, or better still, have a home, kids, family, a farmland full of golden corns, wheat and apple trees. We’ll live happily ever after, just like in the tales.

As he made up his mind, Robert goes to the dormitories to meet his friends. He waits in Carolyn’s room until all his friends gather there and tells them about his decision to leave Valanis. They readily agree with Robert.

‘Yes, they’ve put the heaviest defense in the world in this place, even Vordac himself will have a hard time breaking it,’ says Andreas.

‘But we better talk this over with Pope Xylen before we go. I’m sure she’ll listen to our reasons and she’ll understand.’

Chris adds, ‘Yes, we can’t go on staying in one place. We can still be out there helping people in need, and search for clues about the heir in unexpected places.’

Carol also comments, ‘I’m in perfect health now and ready to go. I’ll help, I won’t be a burden.’

‘Besides,’ says Iris. ‘The monster that really bothers us is called “boredom”, and it’ll diminish our morale before long.’

‘So, what are we waiting for?’ says Robert. ‘Let’s go to Pope Xylen now.’

After a long walk from Basilica Vadisium to the dormitories, Robert and Cristophe arrive in front of the room where Carol is resting. Chris knocks the door and Iris opens it for them. The elf acts a bit cold towards Chris, her boyfriend whose real identity she never knew until now.
Chris signals Iris to come to him so they can talk in private outside, and Robert comes in. He sees Carolyn, sleeping in her bed, with Father Andreas Marvellini beside her, treating her. Her face looks peaceful and normal, means that Zal’fira’s poison in her body is neutralized, just as Algaban, Andreas and Chris said. Now Robert verifies it with his own eyes, and his heart is now at peace.
I bet she’ll be very eager to see me. I better stay here until she awakes, and let her feel the joy of our reunion.
Robert takes a seat near the wall and prays. Suddenly he hears Carolyn’s voice.
‘Robert... Robert...’
Robert finishes his praying immediately and comes near Carol at once. But Andreas halts him, putting his index finger in front of his lips and says,
‘Ssh...’
He points at Carol. She’s still sleeping. She keeps murmuring Robert’s name. Robert is startled to hear that.
Ah, Chris is right! She keeps thinking about me, even in her sleep! But... but I can’t accept her love. I just... can’t.
Robert quickly turns away and walks towards the door.
‘Wait, Robert,’ says Andreas.
Robert stops, but doesn’t look back.
‘Yes, father?’
‘Please stay and listen to me for a moment.’
Andreas comes near Robert, and as he establishes eye-contact with Robert he talks on.
‘You know, I know, Chris and Iris know that Carol cares greatly about you. What makes you feel so hard to embrace her love? I mean, she’s not bad-looking, right?’
‘It has nothing to do with her looks. I must admit that she’s intelligent, resourceful, active, careful, and caring. She will make a perfect wife, but not for me.’
‘Are you married? Or are you in love with somebody else?’
Robert pauses. It looks like he is gathering his courage to expose his innermost secret to another person. So far only Rael’charon, the Royal Advisor of Lore knows. After a long while, with a sigh Robert begins explaining.
‘Yes, father, I do.’
‘Well, want to share it with me?’
Robert wants to talk about it outside, but as he hears faint voices from Iris and Chris’ discussion there he decides to talk in the room in low voice instead.
‘You see,’ Robert begins. ‘I knew this girl since childhood, and when we grew up we grew fond of each other. Her parents are nobles, and so was my master. Although we were neighbors, my status as my master’s bodyguard and apprentice prevented us to see each other freely. Then, I went to battle as a scout under my master. My master fell, and then I was relieved from service.
My hope of being a noble was lost, and I parted with her, saying that we cannot be together. I chose a life as a bounty hunter to forget about her, but no matter how hard I tried, I’m in love with her still. My obsession to obliterate every orc in this world to avenge my family wasn’t strong enough to erase my love for her. At the end, I resolved that all is not lost. As long as we’re still alive, I can see her again. And, if Vadis is willing, I can be a noble or she gave up her title so I can marry her as equals. I’m working hard for that day.’
‘That’s why there’s no room for Carol in your heart right now. Such a great love you have.’
‘Ah, what is love, really? Love is about the merging of two different people with different paths of life. It takes sacrifice, selflessness and commitment from both parties so a relationship can grow. If one is forced or willingly chooses a separate path, the other has to sacrifice to follow that path. If not, well, that’s why couples break apart.’
‘So, in other words,’ says Andreas. ‘A true love means sacrificing our current paths of life and go together along the same path until death do us part.’
‘Exactly. I live for you, and you for me, even if we lose our lives along the way. No regrets.’
‘No regrets, you say? You could lead a much happier life with another. What if she has already married with someone else?’
‘I love her and she loves me in return, that’s all that matters. If she stopped loving me, that’s a different case. The real case is she still swore her love to me at the eve of our parting, so I know she is still waiting for me. Although we can’t be together, I’ll always cherish our memory and live on. I do what I do best, and by Vadis’ will, as my friend once said, maybe, just maybe, our paths will meet again in this world or another. No regrets at all.’
‘Someday I want to meet this friend of yours. I bet we can talk for days and never get tired.’
‘Yeah, I’m glad he enlightened me. Tell you what, when Carol is healthy enough to travel again, after our tasks here are done, we’ll go to Lore and meet him.’
‘... And meet your girlfriend too.’
‘Yeah, that too.’
‘Ah, how I miss my family in Grad.’
‘Let’s pray that your paths will meet again.’
‘Amen to that. Well, that thing also applies to our fellowship, right? I’m glad our paths meet again.’
‘And our bonds become stronger than ever now we show our true selves, not hiding in our masks anymore.’
‘Oh? You mean, you don’t mind having a prince around to travel with us?’
‘Well, as long as Chris keeps using his name “Christopher” and doesn’t go demanding me to bow before him every time I go near him, I really don’t mind at all.’
‘You do have a grudge with his brother, as I may recall. Doesn’t that bother you?’
‘A bit. But he killed my master in a battle, mind you. As the saying goes, “Everything is fair in love and war”. I won’t go punishing and hating all Arcadians to avenge my master. But one thing, if they dare set one foot in Lore to annihilate our countrymen, they must pay with their own lives!’
Andreas falls silent, now understanding the whole thing. Understanding Robert and appreciates him more.
‘Robert... Robert, it’s you!’
Robert and Andreas turn to look at the bed. Carol is now awake, and Robert embraces her like a brother to his sister. Carolyn cries on Robert’s shoulder and hugs him so tightly as though she will never let him go. As she does so, Carol’s face looks very sad and bitter. Robert just lets her pour all her longing and joy on him, and as usual, he rarely shows his smile.
So close, yet so far away.
Meanwhile, outside the room, the elf enchantress and the prodigal prince are hugging and kissing each other lovingly. After reaching a new understanding for each other and renewing their commitments, Chris and Iris pour all their love and affection into one sweet embrace. It strengthens their bonds and rejoins their paths of life.

From attraction to affection
We join in a mutual union
At first we
wear our masks
For many yet untold reasons
Why lie? Why hide?
‘Cause
kisses are so painful to lose
When rock steady is our way
We put our masks
away
And voila! Our roots of affection
Will mend our friction
Or wither
away, tearing apart
Ripped in two ways, trunks depart
Truly, love is
complicated still
When we wear our masks of soul

3.2.9.4. The Prodigal Prince Part One

Half an hour later, Robert is walking with his partners Andreas, Iris and Christopher. Speaking of the latter, it was just revealed to Robert that Christopher’s real identity is Prince Cristophe Jean de Galantine Deveraux, second son to Emperor Sage IV Marcus de Noure Deveraux, current ruler of Arcadia.
This knowledge makes the two of them behave very awkwardly towards each other. Seeing the prospect that this partnership and friendship they’ve built for three years is going to fall apart, Andreas speaks up to melt the ice.
‘Well, Your Highness, shall we return to Carolyn’s quarters to talk this over?’
‘No, father,’ says Cristophe. ‘You two go ahead. I need to talk to Rob. Alone.’
‘As you wish, Your Highness.’
‘Please, father, don’t call me Your Highness.’
Andreas nods, and along with Iris walk on quietly. Iris looks back and stares at Chris in disbelief, demanding an explanation. But Chris ignores her. He just waits until they are out of sight, and then turns to Robert who stands there, staring at him.
‘I believe I owe you an explanation,’ says Chris.
‘Yes, the whole truth. I don’t blame you. It’s not a wrong thing. You must have your own reasons to disguise yourself.’
‘You’re right, Rob. Everybody knows that it’s impossible for a prince to travel freely, so I decided to use a different name similar to my own. I and Carol left Valanis secretly, with permission from our tutors. Actually, it was Carol who wanted to seek adventure, to forget about all her boyfriends Iris wooed. We went to Lore because it’s the best place to start a career as a monster hunter. Then, by Vadis’ will, we met you.’
‘Why didn’t Carolyn change her name?’
‘Because she’s a half-elf, and she’s no royalty. Her father was my uncle, Archduke Thierry Deveraux, cousin to my father, and her mother was the Elf Queen Carolyn’s daughter, Lilliabeth. Thierry and Lilliabeth were drowned when they sailed from Arcadia to Thyrine, so Queen Carolyn adopted and took care of the child named after her as her own. But Carol is never a princess. The Thyrinian High Council decreed that no half-elf may inherit the throne or be regarded as royalty, because half-elves are as short-lived as humans do. So, for little Carol’s safety, the Queen sent her to Valanis to study Vadism and magic.
I never knew who her mentor was, as we were taught in separate dormitories and seldom speak to each other. Carol never told me much about her mentor, only described him as “short”, “kind” and “chubby”. As Carol has no burden due to her status, she can travel freely without having to change her name.’
‘Well, that’s a lot more than what I need to know, but thanks anyway. I’ll keep it a secret. So, tell me more about yourself.’
‘My mother died when I was four when we rode a horse together. I pulled the horse’s mane too hard and it threw us to the ground. She died protecting me. Because of that, my brother Alexis harbored much hatred towards me. It was my fault, really. He has the right to hate me so. Then father sent me to Valanis so Alexis would forget his hatred by and by, knowing that I’ve been “banished” from the palace. No one in Arcadia has ever heard my name again, as though I never existed.
In spite of that, I began to enjoy my new “freedom”. Study hard and play hard, they say. Without any burden of being a crown prince and the plentiful yet never ending funds from my homeland, you probably will want to live like I did, happy and carefree. I rounded up a gang of fellow nobles studying there, and we feasted and enjoyed ourselves like there was no tomorrow. I excelled in my theoretic studies, but flunked in practices. I didn’t hang out with Carol and had many girlfriends, but then Carol came and asked me to go adventuring with her. I thought that was a great idea, as I began to get bored being in Valanis all the time. Father Bernides gave me permission as it was part of my “training program” and to expand my knowledge, practice and experience.
Well, that’s all about me that you need to know. Since you and Iris already knew my true identity, er... you know... You don’t want a prince around, do you? We’ll go separate ways from now on, won’t we?’
‘If you mean things will never be the same again between us, you’re right, Chris, or... Your Highness,’ says Robert, his tone suddenly changes to formal. Chris is crestfallen on hearing this. But Robert is still talking.
‘But the only difference is your name is no longer Christopher, but Prince Cristophe Deveraux. If Your Highness doesn’t mind adventuring with a bunch of rabbles, hunting monsters for bounty, if you still regard me as your friend and partner, I’ll gladly do the same.’
‘Please, Rob, don’t call me “Prince” or “Your Highness”. I still want to go monster-hunting with you. For me, you’re always my friend and my good teacher,’ says Chris. ‘Just call me “Chris”, as always. I kinda like it, though. Sounds nice.’
‘Thank you, Chris. Oh, yes, one thing is still bugging me. About you in Enia’s Sanctum, you didn’t go back because you’re chickened out, right?’
‘Yes. The real reason was I met Father Bernides there, and he advised me to return and stay out from the Sanctum because Alexis was also there. I didn’t want him to take revenge on me along the way. A backstab by our own kin is more dangerous than a legion of chimeras.’
‘I got your point,’ says Robert. ‘Now, let’s go to Carolyn. Seeing her safe and sound makes my heart at peace.’
They behave more warmly towards each other now, as they settled the problem of Chris and Carolyn’s real identities. But one thing for sure: it’ll never be the same again between them. Never again.

3.2.9.3. Basilica Vadisium Part Two

Xylen Felicitia, the High Priestess of Valanis

About ten minutes’ walk from the main entrance, Robert finds himself in a huge, oddly-shaped room. Actually it’s Ankh*)-shaped. The main, round part is the Pope’s throne room, and there are also three-way, T-shaped hallways in front of the room. Robert comes from the hallway straight in front of the throne room.
(* Ankh: The Mark of Vadis and the Holy Force. In our world, it’s the mark of Osiris, an Egyptian god. The round part is called the ‘head’, the horizontal line below is the ‘hand’, and the vertical line is the ‘foot’. The mark portrays Vadis himself in the beginning of most of his teachings.
The throne room – not like in palaces – looks like a cathedral with the floor with tiers that also function as seats for the church officials. The seats are circling a grandstand at the lowest tier on the farthest corner of the room. Five chairs stand on that grandstand behind a long, large table.
Observing these arrangements, we can readily assume that a Pope is a servant for all Vadisians, not the other way around, and the function of the room is more for conferences and lawmaking than audiences in a ‘worldly’ monarchy.
There seem to be no big conference going on at the moment, but the Pope is there with her aides, discussing something with the five seats now circling the table.
‘Stay here for a while, you three. I’ll inform the Pope that you’re coming,’ says Andreas. He walks towards the Pope very carefully. He salutes when he is quite close by the Pope, and then whispers something in her ear. The Pope stands up at once, and looking at the guests, she says,
‘Come closer, Vadis’ Champions!’
As Robert walks towards the grandstand, he is astounded to see the Pope, although it’s shown in his eyes only. Pope Xylen Felicitia is indeed a divinely beautiful lady. Her aquamarine eyes and hair match perfectly with her pinkish skin, while the white-gold Divine Papal Robe she’s wearing expresses her absolute, unquestionable authority as Vadis’ ambassador, representative and prophet in this world.
Pope Xylen turns to her aide and commands with a moderate, calm voice.
‘Sister Solnii, summon the rest of the champions in this room now, so we can proceed. This meeting is adjourned.’
Solnii the priestess salutes Xylen and immediately darts away to do as she was told. The other high priests in the meeting immediately stand up, salute and leave the room orderly and quietly.
Andreas, Bernides and the guests take their seats on the floor, second tier from the bottom and wait. Pope Xylen’s face turns very serious, as this affair concerns all Aurelia and all Eternia.
A minute later, they hear footsteps coming from the throne room entrance. A monk comes in, followed by a man and a she-elf. The she-elf notices Robert and shouts,
‘Robert! Oh, Robert! Praise Enia you’re here!’
Chris also greets Robert enthusiastically, ‘Robert, my man! You finally finished your training! Well done!’
‘Thanks, guys,’ says Robert. ‘How’s Carol?’
Chris says, ‘She’s just fine, thanks to Algaban’s directions. She’s resting in the dormitories now. You know, Rob,’ he pauses a while, a bit taken aback. ‘She kept murmuring your name in her sleep.’
Robert is surprised on hearing this, but he doesn’t say a word. Just then some more people come into the hall. The priestess Solnii is accompanied by five people: Viscount Adler von Bachmann, wielder of the cursed sword Kraal’shazar; Kyflynn the night elf assassin and his partners Desmond Edmundsen the barbarian berserker and Agustina Vyrakova the ice mage; and last but not least, Prince Alexis Deveraux of Arcadia.
Without saying a word, the champions exchange glances. Adler looks at Robert with disdain, and as soon as all champions take their seats, Pope Xylen begins her speech with the reason of Adler’s sourness upon Robert.
‘Please forgive us, Lord Adler, for the delays and for borrowing the Aurora to pick Robert up. We have to wait until Robert’s training is finished because he, like the rest of you who fought in Enia’s Sanctum has the right to hear about what I’m going to tell you.

As you might’ve heard by now, there were odd things happened recently. Strikes and raids were attempted upon Adair’s Arsenal and some prominent, important people, including Robert Chandler here. Master Eidos, tell us what you saw.’
Eidos briefly explains about Robert who was attacked by harpies, and when he’s finished, everybody stares at Robert with concern.

The Pope continues, ‘And that’s just one of many. Zal’fira’s raid. A Cardinal stabbed to death in his sleep. A palace attendant in Myrcalia was found dead with her throat slit, and many more. Now you might say that the murders were ordinary crimes, but as the raids and attacks from the dark forces and the murders have come into an alarming number, we can be sure that the dark forces are active now.
Let me tell you one fact: Our mission in Enia’s Sanctum failed.’

That bit of news struck the champions like lightning. Even Adler gets up and yells in protest,
‘That’s nonsense! We stopped Vordac and Paliades there! Vordac is gone! This sword is the proof that his spirit has left it!’ Adler nudges to his sword Deathblade.

‘Indeed, Lord Adler, Vordac’s spirit has departed from the sword, but not from Eternia. You may assume that he perished with Paliades, but I tell you, he’s still here.
The knowledge that moved me to gather the champions to Enia’s Sanctum came from no other but Vordac himself, who invaded and tortured my mind just to let his words through. It was an ultimatum, a threat!
Then, when word came to me that Paliades was the heir and was destroyed, I thought Vordac’s threat was over and we can breathe freely again. But once again, Vordac invaded my mind, telling me that he still exists. Paliades was not the heir, he was just a decoy. Vordac gave most of his energy to Paliades as reward, but never went inside him. The real heir, Vordac’s new host is actually around all this time, and he has made his moves just recently.’

‘And so, it’s clear at last,’ Kyflynn cuts in. ‘We’re just pawns, baits tossed into Vordac’s trap.’
Father Bernides gets up at once and replies calmly, ‘Nak, nak, I wouldn’t say such thing if I were you, Master Kyflynn. You can say that to our fallen friends and my late brothers, but Sister Xylen, believe it or not, insisted on going there at first. Our brothers and sisters persuaded her not to go, I volunteered to go in her stead, and she confided in me.

Me and my brothers must disguise ourselves because our magicks and powers are lacking, compared to you, the champions. We must spare our mana to do telepathic communications with the Pope. I hope that answered your question, Robert.’ Robert responds with a quick nod.

‘Brother Bernides, you don’t have to tell them that much to save my face,’ says Xylen with authority. ‘I was the one to blame. I was ignorant about Vordac’s cunning that truthfully exceeds my mind. For that, I, who led you all into deathly traps, beg your forgiveness.’
Saying that, Xylen who is standing in front of the champs on that moment, goes down to her knees. This puts a surprise on almost all champions, except, naturally, Robert and Agustina.
Adler, however, remains indifferent and talks, ‘Hundreds came, hundreds died, but only one claimed the prize!’ He rubs the Deathblade Kraal’shazar hanging on his back. Xylen’s action meant absolutely nothing to him.
‘Forgiveness given.’
Now everybody stares back to see the one who said that. It was Robert. Bernides is a bit confused and amazed to hear that, because it was Robert who talked bitterly of the Pope a while ago. But his expression changes when Robert continues.

‘I, representing all hunters who died and suffered in Enia’s Sanctum, swear before this sword,’ He draws his saber Grimlock and lifts it up in the air. ‘That we understood the Pope’s position over this matter, and thereby pardon her. However, if there’s any single proof that Pope Xylen is untrustworthy, and if anyone should raise any more doubt about Enia’s Sanctum again, they all must answer to this sword, Grimlock.’
‘Fair enough,’ says Kyflynn.

‘Make that Grimlock and Colathaloc. I’m with Robert,’ says Alexis.
However, Adler of Borgia objects.
‘Humph! How dare this... peasant made such oath and expected us to honor it? No way, not in a million years!’
‘Then perhaps our swords will tell whether I’m worthy of such oath,’ says Robert, pointing his Grimlock towards Adler.
‘Let’s do, now.’

Adler also points his Kraal’shazar straight to Robert’s neck. The two champions are at a brink of a fight, but before Adler unleashes his first move, Fingers of the Blade, Pope Xylen shouts,
‘STOP IT, you two! Please, don’t spill blood in this holy place!’
Robert and Adler stop at once. Adler just realized that he has embarrassed himself with such a childish act, and Robert sheathes his sword with thoughts of his own.
There was too much blood spilled in Enia’s Holy Place. Know you what of holy? Know you what of blood? Who tricked whom? Who blasphemed against whom? I took that oath so we don’t dabble in the past anymore and focus on making plans to stop the heir. I better stick to it and not ruining it now. I’ll settle this with Adler when we are out from the Holy City.
While Robert is deep in his thoughts, Christopher speaks up, ‘My friends, what Robert meant was we better not quarrel over spilled milk anymore, and focus on the dangers ahead. As the Holy Mother has most of the information we need, we better ask her to share it with us so we can stop the heir before more blood is spilled.’
‘Well said, brother,’ says Alexis. ‘I couldn’t agree more.’
It takes a moment for Robert to realize something.
Alexis... he called Chris ‘brother’!? No wonder they look almost alike! So, my apprentice is a prince after all. Well, he’s got a lot to explain after this meeting’s over.
And it took Chris a bit longer to realize that his brother has just revealed his real identity to Robert, Iris and all people in that room. Whether it was accidental or deliberate, Chris is very upset because that one word, ‘brother’ was spoken by the right person in the wrong time. Chris doesn’t speak another word until the end of the meeting.

‘Thank you, Prince Cristophe,’ says Xylen.
Oh, that’s his real name all right, Robert thinks.
Xylen talks on, ‘What we must do now is to think and prepare against the heir’s next attacks. Most likely, he will strike in Valanis, as this is the center of the Holy Forces. And I will be his main target. So, I’m going to ask you a favor: Please stay here and guard me until we can identify and apprehend the heir. If he chose to strike somewhere else, feel free to go there to investigate, but at least two or three of you please stay.’
Robert says, ‘I’ll stay. My friend is still under treatment here, so I practically have nowhere else to go to. I’ll stay until Carolyn is fully healed.’
‘Of course we’ll stay here too, as members of Robert’s hunting party,’ says Iris.
‘I and my party will go,’ says Adler. ‘There’s no point staying guard here when we might be better off hitting the road.’ Hernan and Eidos may have different thoughts, but their silence signifies that they decided to follow their party leader (and keep their eyes on him).
‘I, Desmond and Tina have talked, and we agree to stay for a while,’ says Kyflynn. ‘Three weeks max. Then we’ll go about our business and help if called.’
Alexis says, ‘I’m needed in Arcadia, so I’ll go after settling some diplomatic affairs here in Valanis. I’m very sorry, Holy Mother.’

Xylen is thoughtful for a moment, and then says, ‘I see. Maybe my request is too troublesome for you and your businesses. So, let’s make this three days. Stay here in Ascension for three days, no lest, no more.
I have a strong feeling that everything we’re discussing here will go to the heir sooner or later, and he might want to take immediate action. Three days. It’s not for me. Do that for Vadis and everything you believe in. The heir drew first blood, and we’ll make sure he won’t bleed this world dry.’
